Ash Patil writes...

This is how it all began...

In October 1975, Rickmansworth based Dennis Murdoch along with Stanley Weeden and Noel Cox came up with a brilliant idea of starting a new music society "To encourage the appreciation and presentation of music and associated arts in the area covering mainly Rickmansworth but covering the whole of the Three Rivers District Council...".

They quickly set out to organise TRMS's very first concert on 7th December 1975 at the Gade Theatre (now Watersmeet) with Christmas Music and Carols starring Watford's internationally famous Anne Pashley (soprano), her husband, Jack Irons (tenor), Jack and Julie Smethurst, Noel Cox (organ) and Jonathan Cohen as conductor.

From all records and as narrated in this cutting, this concert was not only a great success but some 302 tickets were sold including 24 VIPs. Obviously for advance bookings and for sales on the door, there were no computers in those days ; these were done manually.

And what's more, the reserved and unreserved tickets were £1 and 70p each respectively.

I will be bringing this Archives Book to our next Peter Nall String Ensemble Concert on Sunday 13 October at Chorleywood Memorial Hall.

I am immensely grateful to Sally Furr, Dennis Murdoch's daughter for bringing in the archives of those early days of TRMS and I am proud and privileged to be today's bearer of the torch along with my trusted colleagues in carrying the spirit of those initial objectives today.

What would we have done without the foresight, planning and perseverance of Dennis Murdoch, Stanley Weeden and Noel Cox? Rickmansworth would have certainly missed out on delightful music and a fantastic tradition. I humbly express my gratitude to these wonderful people.

Jennifer Gradidge, who lived in Meadow Way was a lifelong patron of TRMS. When she sadly died in early May this year, she has left a very sizeable donation in her will for TRMS. I am grateful to her in the first place for her generosity and her brother David Gradidge and the family for contacting TRMS.

TRMS is taking on a major project to organise a gala concert with performances by the Purcell School soloists and its orchestra in aid of the School itself, Watford Workshop and TRMS. This concert is planned to take place at Watford Colosseum on Thursday 26th March 2020 at 7.00 pm. TRMS is actively looking for sponsors for this concert to, in the minimum, underwrite the cost of the venue hire at approx. £ 4000. Please contact me for more information.

Thanks once again for your continued understanding and loyalty and if you have any comments, suggestions to make, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes for a happy summer, Ash
